Photography is the only art that is natively surreal, but what renders a photograph surreal is not its irrefutable pathos as a message from the past & the concreteness of its intimations about social class, but rather its almost magical seeming illusion of realism & its ability to achieve what we instinctively respond to as a synthesis of conscious & subconscious vision. Looking at any black-&-white photograph gives us a hint of what it might be like to look at a "still" from a dream.
